CTG PCS Quality Lab Shift Technician in Baytown, Texas

Description

CTG is seeking to fill a PCS Quality Lab Shift Technician opening for a client in Baytown, Texas.

Location : Baytown, TX

Duration : 12 months

The technician’s primary responsibility within the polycarbonate laboratory is analyzing samples from the in-process and finished goods stages of the production processes. The technician is responsible for accurate reporting of these results to manufacturing. The incumbent works closely with production, warehouse, and laboratory personnel in supporting efforts for testing and process improvements. Technicians within the laboratory are responsible for troubleshooting of equipment and are capable of working independently as well as a member of the laboratory team. Safety is the highest priority; the applicant must embrace and participate in our safety culture and programs.

Duties:

  • Performs environmental testing, in-process, and finished goods testing.

  • Performs validation testing of raw materials received from outside suppliers.

  • Approves raw material barge Certificates of Analysis (COAs) from suppliers not tested for release.

  • Key Testing: evaluation of color chips, MVR/MFR testing, and visual inspection of polycarbonate pellets.

  • Prepares samples for injection and extrusion molding then evaluation.

  • Operates and maintains testing equipment for:

  • Extrusion and hydraulic injection molding machines, FTIR spectrophotometers, UV-Vis, pH meter, analytical balances, moisture analyzer, Rheotek viscometers, Melt Indexers, Metrohm Titroprocessors, Karl Fischer Titrators, Gas Chromatography & HPLC, Headspace GC, UltraScan Pro – color difference, YI, Cap Y.

  • Performs testing in support of the statistical quality control (SQC) program for instruments.

  • Performs minor maintenance of laboratory instruments.

  • Performs basic troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.

  • Writes a Technical Service Request (TSR) when minor maintenance or basic troubleshooting cannot resolve the instrument problem.

  • Entry of laboratory data into Sample Manager (LIMS).

  • Segregates liquid waste and solid waste generated from testing during the work shift.

  • Disposal of generated PC waste i.e. pellets, paddies, goobers, string from testing into warehouse boxes.

  • Support productions need for accurate results through timely and reliable sample testing.

  • Supports the unit chemists and color specialist with sample testing requests.

  • Work with production personnel to resolve process quality issues in a timely manner.

  • Works safely to prevent on-the-job injuries by following standard operation procedures, safety procedures, and safe handling of chemicals.

  • Performs safety and housekeeping walkthrough of work areas.

  • Maintains a clean work area and stocks work area with supplies.

  • Write up of shift relief in Shift Connector by the end of shift.

  • Reviews Sample Manager throughout the shift for failing results entered by him/her and takes action.

Requirements:

  • Associate of Arts in Science related degree with the following requirements AND/OR;

  • 64 hours in a science curriculum

  • 1 year of general chemistry with labs for science majors

  • 1 year of organic chemistry with labs for science majors

  • 1 college algebra course or higher level math course

  • Basic Computer Skills

  • Critical thinking and analytical skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

  • At least three years of lab experience

  • Experience with lab software systems (e.g. Sample Manager, Empower, Tiamo)

  • Experience with software systems (e.g. SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

The polycarbonate laboratory encompasses a large volume of samples for physical testing. The applicant must know that samples arrive to the laboratory in 5lb to 25lb bags for evaluation. Lifting through the day is required. Other requirements are as follows:

  • Willingness to work a rotating 12hr shift.

  • Willingness to work his/her fair share of overtime.

  • Removal of generated laboratory waste by the end of shift to the waste pad.

  • Exchange of methylene chloride totes using the buddy system to place a full tote in service.

  • Willingness to work alone for a period of time in a phenol lab. Lone Worker alert button is utilized.

  • Consult with the Team Leader (acting supervisor) on shift with concerns or needs.
