Windows Server Engineer

CTG is currently recruiting for a Windows Server Engineer for a key client in the general Albany NY area. The Windows Server Engineer will be responsible for supporting and maintaining the Microsoft Windows Server Operating system, Microsoft Active Directory, and the Virtualization technologies in the client’s environment.

Location: Rensselaer, NY

Project Duration: 3 to 6 months temp to perm, with a contract lasting at least 3 years


Delivers second level remote hardware and software support services to clients to resolve product use and multi-product/platform problems, and/or questions relating to enterprise systems, networks and application software, as well as desktop applications that are beyond the scope of the client’s first level help desk support function.

Provides referrals and/or dispatches to other service providers to ensure that client’s service level and technical requirements are met.

Provides alerts and situation status information to both client and Unisys management.

Coordinates critical customer issues as well as new product and/or system implementations.

Prepares and approves technical documentation and ensures that technical and customer documentation is clear, accurate and complete. Identifies training needs.

May develop and conduct training sessions for other analysts and customers.

May lead teams of analysts on defined projects.


Responsible for supporting and maintaining the Microsoft Windows Server Operating system, Microsoft Active Directory, and the Virtualization technologies in the environment.

This includes planning for and responding to service outages and other problems, and being a Tier 3 escalation point for moderately complex server problems beyond the knowledge of other technical support staff.

Ensures customer satisfaction by advising customers on preventative maintenance and configurations which may impact product performance.

Takes responsibility for potential or desired follow-up services or problem escalation.

Fully qualified server engineer.

High degree of troubleshooting.

Self-starter needing some guidance from the team lead.


Provide hands-on support and engineering work in the Windows 2008/2012 server environment.

Provide hands-on support and engineering work in the VMware 5.5 environment.

Configure, manage and maintain a VBlock Converged Infrastructure environment.

Some Knowledge of Datacenter infrastructure including Cisco UCS, EMC, vBlock, VMware and Windows Server .

Deliver patches and updates to the VMWare vSphere platform management systems including, but not limited to vSphere Hypervisor (ESXI), vCenter Management Toolset, and VMWare Tools.

Coordiate implementation of VBlock patches by working with 3rd Party vendors to ensure updates are current.

Develop and Establish automated corrective actions for server problems where possible.

Participate in On-call after-hours support schedule for server systems to be performed on a rotational basis.

Review all job aid documentation and follow all step-by-step instructions to ensure work adheres to the customer requirements.

Adherence to change and incident management processes.

Work the incident queue to troubleshoot and resolve L3 tickets.

Close all support requests tickets in a timely manner with a focus on customer satisfaction and SLAs.

Submit RFCs for all changes made in the environment, following documented detailed oriented procedures.

Maintain current documentation for all processes and procedures.

Good verbal and written communications.

Communicate effectively with customers, peers and supervisors.

Work on project requests and ensuring the Windows management team is kept informed of all project requests that are received.

Focus to ensure all projects are completed on time and within budget


Interact with internal customers to resolve issues, respond to requests and understand business requirements in order to optimize the computing environment

Deliver Microsoft operating systems (OS) and Microsoft application patches

Work with vendors as necessary to implement and maintain enterprise technologies

Familliarity with Windows Server 2016

Compliance Requirements


  • 5 years minimum IT experience

  • Familliarity with Windows Server 2016

  • 5 years minimum experience in an enterprise server environment with both administration and problem resolution of Microsoft Windows Server 2008and above required

  • 3 years minimum working with VMWare products

  • Experience supporting a large VMware environment

  • 2 years minimum experience working in VBlock environments

  • Knowledge of ITIL processes and experience adhering to them in a production environment

  • Windows Server 2008/2012 Active Directory management including DNS, GPO expertise required

  • Professional attitude, appearance and communication skills required

  • Management of a large VMWare and Windows 2008/2012 environment
